Dear Incoming 2nd Grade Families,
Hope you’re enjoying the first few days of vacation!! Summer is a great time to rest and recharge. It’s also a great time to catch up on reading!! Research shows that elementary students who read just 10 books over the summer gain as much in reading achievement as those attending summer school.
The expectation is your child will make reading a consistent part of their summer routine. While I do not require a summer reading list, attached are some suggested book series depending on your child’s reading interests.
There are many wonderful online resources that offer a wide variety of free, just right books for your child. I highly recommend Epic! which includes over 40,000 books/audiobooks/videos, reading incentives, and progress tracking. Parents can sign up online for a free, 30-day trial by clicking on the link or visiting getepic.com.
Lastly, if you know that your child could use some foundational review of their addition and subtraction math facts, I strongly encourage using Mr. Nussbaum or IXL for some daily math practice. Just 10 minutes of skill practice a day can have a significant impact on improving your child's math fluency. Both websites offer a wide range of free resources in varying levels depending on your child's interest and ability.
