Reading

Dear Third Grade Families,

Welcome to Third Grade! One of the many ways your child will be learning this year is through independent reading. There’s solid research that backs up Dr. Seuss’ famous quote, “The more you read, the more you will know. The more you learn, the more places you will go!”

Please have your child read a minimum of TWO chapter books this summer. Your child may choose any chapter books of high-interest and at their reading level. You may find the following links helpful for choosing books and encouraging summer reading:

If your child is a reluctant independent reader, please feel free to read with your child and take turns reading aloud to each other. Another option is for your child to listen to a book on tape and follow along in a print copy. It is highly recommended that your child read at least 15 minutes daily to be ready for third grade. I’ve attached a list of books we use in third grade, so please do not read these books.

Please have your child fill out the attached Summer Reading BINGO board as they read. There is also a Summary Reading Formfor your child to fill out for at least one of the books they read this summer—their choice!

On the first day of school please have your child bring these 3 things:

1. The completed Summer Reading BINGO board and worksheet (there will be a reward for a black-out board, completed in full).

2. At least one completed Summary Reading Form.

3. A book for quiet reading time.

I’ve also attached a sheet with suggested activities to keep your child’s reading and writing skills sharp and growing over the summer to help prevent the summer learning “slide.” We hope you have a great summer. I look forward to seeing you on the first day of school!

Warmly,

Linda Elliot

The following books are used in the 3rd grade class throughout the school year.

PLEASE DO NOT READ THEM DURING THE SUMMER.

Entering 3rd Grade Reading Packet

Math

Dear 3rd Grade parents,

Mazel Tov to your children and your families on a wonderful year!  I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as well as provide you with some summer materials.

I am excited to be your child’s math teacher next year.  Summer is a wonderful time to relax and be with family; however, it can also be a time where a student may loose up to 30% of their learnings from the prior year.

Because of that statistic, I have assembled a quick calendar of math problems that can help your child retain more of the knowledge they worked so hard to attain.  This packet is completely voluntary and does not need to be returned in August. It consists of 3 months of calendars, and on each day there are one to three math problems or a reference to an attached worksheet.  You may choose to do as many or as few problems as you are able to; however, I wanted your child to have this resource at their fingertips.  I suggest you put each month’s calendar on the fridge and have your child do problems as they have down time.

I look forward to teaching your children in the next school year as well as getting to know you.

Have a journey-filled summer!

Janetta
