Yom Kippur - A Memorable Learning Experience

Dear IRDS families,“People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou)Judaism teaches that when we hurt one person, three parties are injured: the one we offended, G-d, and ourselves. We must ask forgiveness from all three, but in a specific order. We must start with the one we offended, then ask for G-d’s forgiveness; only then can we seek forgiveness from ourselves.   Read More...

Rosh Hashanah Cards.... Where did they come from?

Dear IRDS families,It is that time of year again, “The Chagim” – The High Holy Days, which call for a fresh start, deep self-reflection and lots of time to spend with the people we care about. Speaking of the people who surround us, one of the customs during this time of year is to send L’Shana Tova cards to the people in our community. The origins of this custom date back to the 14th century Ashkenazi Jewish community in Germany. The Talmudist authority, Maharil (Yaakov Ben Moshe Levi Moelin), a...  Read More...

    I'm Bored

We had just sat down in the car, buckled our seatbelts and began to drive. We had been in the car for no less than two minutes when from the backseat I hear “I’m bored.” Not wanting to engage in this conversation I kept my focus on driving, but no less than two minutes later, from the same seat I heard a loud and very deliberate gasp and the words, “Now I am really bored.”How often do we hear this from our children? How often do they sit down at the dinner tabl...  Read More...

  • Talking About School With Your Children

Research demonstrates that one of the ways to support your child’s education is to talk with them about their day. Your child spends anywhere from 4 to 7.5 hours a day at Ilan Ramon Day School, and engaging them in conversation is so important. However, for many of us this is challenging, as your child may not offer up enough information for a meaningful conversation to occur. For many of us, when we pick up our child we ask, “How was school today?” and quickly realize that the ...  Read More...

    Welcome Back IRDS 2017

The first day of school is one of the greatest days in the entire school year. Everyone is filled with enthusiasm, joy and excitement for the year ahead, and for the opportunities it presents. Seeing the smiling faces on the children throughout the school only reinforces my belief that we are an energetic and strong community.   Read More...

Welcome Paula - Our New ECE Director

Dear Ilan Ramon Day School Community, We are thrilled to announce that after an extensive search, beginning July 1, 2017, Paula Hoffman will be taking over as the Ilan Ramon Day School's Early Childhood Director.  Paula Hoffman has been in the field of Jewish early childhood education for more than twenty years, having previously worked as a teacher in both pre-k and kindergarten at Ilan Ramon Day School (under its former name of Heschel West), and with ten years of experience as an EC...  Read More...

  • All Things Are Possible....

Margaret Mead once said, “That one should never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." This sentiment has been running through my head over the last month, as we were heading into Passover and then over this current break… as a small and mighty community did in fact come together and made significant changes to our home. While the work is not yet finished (still some painting to be done, n...  Read More...

    A Shabbat Message

Dear IRDS Community,It has been a difficult week for our IRDS/Heschel West community with another tragic loss.  David Rifkind was a caring, committed and dedicated force in our school and in the larger Jewish Community for almost two decades. At his funeral, it was said over and over that "in his 51 years, David lived the life of ten men." There are no truer words, as David gave of himself passionately and fully to every cause he took on.   Read More...

    Our Sacred Community

Between rolling hills and trees, among butterflies, bunnies and birds, in Agoura California, there is a special Jewish community day school with one specific vision: Education is Sacred Work. We take this vision very seriously, and take pride in the fact that we ARE what we say we DO.This year began with a faculty orientation that focused on our school’s mission. It continued with a Back to School Night, which highlighted why we see ourselves as a Sacred Community, and lately we have been addres...  Read More...
