The buzzword in education today is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). At IRDS, we don’t just talk about STEM -- we do it!
The Robots are back again this year and we are so excited to be continuing our program this year.
What is a robotics program? Robots are machines with a computer “brain” that can be programmed to perform tasks. Robots that perform tasks by themselves are called “autonomous systems.” Our students will learn to design, build, program, and drive robots. They will learn problem solving, teamwork, engineering, computer science and programming –skills we believe are needed to be successful in college and careers in the 21st century.
As we continue to grow this program, students in the upper grades will be able to build several different kinds of robots. They will learn about motors, batteries, gears, wheels, radio frequencies, and sensors. The children will be having so much fun they won’t even realize how much science and math knowledge they’ll learn: about mechanics, materials, motion and electricity. They will also learn computer science by programming their robots to carry out instructions they have written.
Robots are not just fun; they help support the learning of the future! High school students who have joined robotics teams are now being recruited by top-tier schools in much the same way elite athletes are recruited. Robotics is known as the sport of the mind, and is the only school sport where every kid can grow up to become a pro – a professional engineer, programmer or high-tech entrepreneur.
IRDS is excited to offer this cutting-edge technology in robotics and autonomous systems to our students.
